Data sources and credits
FastGIS is built on public and open data. Most of the licences below oblige us to name the people who made it — not in a response header, but where you can read it. This page is that credit, and it is generated from the code that does the fetching, so it cannot quietly fall behind what we actually use.
Generated from the code by scripts/dump_data_sources.py — run make docs-gen to refresh it. The source list is derived from the declared source registries, the credit strings the API emits, and every external host named in the server, the data pipelines and both apps; what we build from each source comes from docs-site/data-source-descriptions.yml.
⚠️ How complete this is
- 60 third-party sources are in use.
- 6 of them have no licence recorded. Nobody has read the publisher's terms and written them down. They are marked
UNVERIFIEDbelow rather than filled in with a plausible guess, because a credits page is the kind of document people rely on. - 8 carry a share-alike obligation. Whether what we build from them inherits it is an open legal question — see the section on that below.
- 3 sources are listed as deliberately NOT used — a recorded refusal, so the decision stays visible.

Every source, and what we do with it
What we derive is the column that matters for licensing: using data is one thing, and building a database out of it is another.
| Source | What we take | What we derive | Where you meet it | Licence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Copernicus GLO-30 DEM (elevation attributes) | Trail and route geometry with its cycling attributes. | Elevation profiles for trails, the terrain-RGB and slope tile layers, hillshade, and the contour lines in the basemap. The same DEM release is used far beyond the MTB pipeline that declares it. | /tiles/terrain-rgb, /tiles/slope, /topo and the basemap | Copernicus DEM licence (free use with attribution) |
| OpenStreetMap cycling/MTB trails, routes and POIs (Europe) | Trail and route geometry with its cycling attributes. | OSM-sourced cycling and MTB trails, kept in their own layer. | /mtb and the MTB trail browser | ODbL 1.0 |
| Turrutebasen — sykkelruter (Tur- og friluftsruter) | Trail and route geometry with its cycling attributes. | A Europe-wide cycling and MTB trail catalogue — geometry, difficulty classification, elevation profiles and access scoring. | /mtb and the MTB trail browser | Åpne data (no named license) |
| Wikipedia / Wikimedia (place enrichment) | Article extracts and lead images for places along a route. | The "about this place" cards in trip stories and StoryMaps. | Trip StoryMaps and the enrichment API | CC BY-SA 4.0 |
| DWD ICON-EU precipitation, wind gusts and 2 m temperature (opendata.dwd.de) | The hourly TOT_PREC, VMAX_10M and T_2M fields of the newest complete ICON-EU model run (regular 0.0625° lat-lon, GRIB2, 0.5–1.2 MB per hour and field), fetched by the worker from DWD's open-data directories four times a day at most. | Precipitation accumulations are turned into hourly amounts; gusts (the hour's maximum) and temperature are taken as published. Each is warped once to web-mercator and kept as immutable per-run frames — the forecast band of the rain, gust and temperature timelines, rendered under our own palettes. | /weather/rain/frames.json, /weather/gust/frames.json, /weather/temp/frames.json (forecast), their /tiles/rain/…, /tiles/gust/…, /tiles/temp/… and the weather timeline in the rider app | GeoNutzV (German open geodata ordinance) — attribution |
| ESA WorldCover 10 m land cover | Land-cover rasters for the candidate areas. | The urban filter that removes town beaches from the catalogue. | The beach POI layers (as a filter — the raster is not republished) | CC BY 4.0 |
| Esri World Imagery | Satellite tiles requested directly by the client. | Nothing — the tiles are displayed as published. Used as the global fallback under the national orthophoto mosaic, which is preferred wherever it has coverage. | The satellite basemap in both clients | ⚠️ UNVERIFIED |
| EUMETNET OPERA weather-radar composite (via MeteoGate Open Radar Data) | The pan-European instantaneous rain-rate composite (RATE, mm/h, 2 km, every 15 minutes): the last two hours are listed from the MeteoGate Open Radar Data API and each new Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFF is fetched from its 24-hour S3 cache by the worker, on a schedule — phones never talk to either host. | Each composite is warped once to web-mercator and kept as an immutable frame; the rain tiles are rendered from those frames with our own palette, and the frame manifest is what the rider app's rain timeline scrubs through. Our own nowcast (extrapolated from these frames) and the forecast layer are planned on top — see PLANNING/TODO_rain_timeline.md. | /weather/rain/frames.json, /tiles/rain/{frame}/… and the rain layer in the rider app | CC BY 4.0 |
Mapzen elevation-tiles-prod (SRTM + GMTED2010) | .hgt elevation tiles from the public AWS bucket (s3.amazonaws.com/elevation-tiles-prod/skadi), no authentication. | The local elevation store behind self-hosted OpenTopoData, used for road and track elevation enrichment where no national DEM covers the area. | /topo and elevation profiles, via the local_hgt backend | ⚠️ UNVERIFIED |
| MET Norway 1 km hourly forecast (thredds.met.no, Nordic) | For each ICON-EU run we ingest, the matching hourly steps of MET's newest post-processed 1 km forecast run (precipitation_amount, wind_speed_of_gust, air_temperature_2m, and since the weather hazards work probability_of_snow_phase, probability_of_thunder, wind_direction_10m), range-read out of the per-run NetCDF on thredds — never the whole ~4 GB file. Every three hours the same run's steps are also warped whole into Nordic 1 km overlay frames. For visibility, which the 1 km file lacks, the same thredds host serves MET's MEPS 2.5 km deterministic run (visibility_in_air, fog_area_fraction) over OPeNDAP, one step per request. | Inside the Nordic footprint MET's 1 km values replace ICON-EU's in the rain, gust and temperature forecast frames (refreshed with each ICON run, four times a day); outside it ICON stands. One frame per hour either way. | The forecast band of /weather/rain/frames.json, /weather/gust/frames.json, /weather/temp/frames.json and /weather/vis/frames.json, and their tiles, in the Nordics — both pasted into the ICON frames and as the overlay frames those manifests name per hour | NLOD 2.0 / CC BY 4.0 |
| MET Norway Locationforecast (api.met.no) | Point weather forecasts along a planned route. | The weather-along-route panel and the departure-time picker. | Route planning in the rider app and the web client | NLOD 2.0 / CC BY 4.0 |
| MET Norway radar nowcast (thredds.met.no, Nordic 1 km) | The timesteps of the newest 5-minute Nordic radar mosaic that match our nowcast's valid times, range-read out of the NetCDF on thredds (never the whole 90 MB file) each time our own nowcast is issued. | Within the Nordic mosaic MET's model-corrected 1 km nowcast replaces our own 2 km extrapolation inside the rain timeline's nowcast frames; outside it ours stands. One frame per valid time either way. | The nowcast band of /weather/rain/frames.json and its tiles, in the Nordics | NLOD 2.0 / CC BY 4.0 |
Natural Earth admin-0 boundaries (via the datasets/geo-countries repo) | Country polygons, fetched once and cached. | The per-tile country buckets that let the offline-pack picker say "Italy" instead of listing 1°×1° tiles. | The offline-packs picker in the rider app | Public domain (Natural Earth) |
| Nominatim (OpenStreetMap Foundation) | Occasional geocoding lookups against the public instance. | A fallback place lookup, and admin-boundary relations at build time. | /routing/geocode fallback path | ODbL 1.0 (via OpenStreetMap) |
| OpenFreeMap | Vector basemap tiles, used by the StoryMap viewer. | Nothing — rendered as published. | Trip StoryMaps and the story editor preview | ODbL 1.0 (via OpenStreetMap) |
| OpenStreetMap | Whole-country extracts from Geofabrik (nightly .osm.pbf), plus live element queries against the public Overpass API. | The routing graph (Valhalla tiles), the self-hosted vector basemap, the unpaved-surface classification, barrier and gate data, the TET augmented network, and POI layers including speed cameras and fuel stations. Also our own road-curvature database: three algorithms of ours score OSM geometry directly — total turning (Σ|Δbearing|), turning density per km, and mean corner radius — each into its own database, so the twistiness scores in FastGIS are computed here rather than taken from anybody. | /tiles/basemap, /routing/*, /curvature, /tiles/tet, the offline packs, and every POI overlay in both clients | ODbL 1.0 (Open Database License) |
| Photon (Komoot) | The prebuilt Photon search index (downloaded from GraphHopper) which we self-host, with the public photon.komoot.io instance as a fallback. | Place search and reverse geocoding. | /routing/geocode and the search box in every client | ODbL 1.0 (via OpenStreetMap) |
| Sentinel-2 (Copernicus), via the Element 84 Earth Search STAC API | Multispectral scenes over candidate coastlines. | The sand-detection model behind the beach catalogue — the imagery itself is never republished, only the polygons the classifier produces. | The beach POI layers | Copernicus Sentinel data — free, full and open |
| Trans Euro Trail® | The published per-country GPX tracks. | The TET network tiles, per-country indices, pre-baked direction of travel, and an augmented OSM extract used to build routing tiles that follow the trail. | /tiles/tet and the TET browser in the rider app. ⚠️ We do NOT distribute the GPX itself — download it from transeurotrail.org, where you are asked to read and accept the terms and the safety notice first. | Trans Euro Trail® download terms (click-through, accepted at download) |
| VIIRS Night-time Lights (VNL) annual composite | An annual masked-radiance raster, downloaded out of band and passed to the pipeline with --in-dir. | The Europe sky-glow surface, which becomes the darkness score on stargazing sites and the remoteness signal for forgotten places. | The stargazing and forgotten-places POI layers | ⚠️ UNVERIFIED |
| WorldPop population density | Population-density rasters. | A remoteness signal used in POI scoring. | POI scoring (the raster is not republished) | CC BY 4.0 |

What these licences require of us
Not every source imposes more than a credit. These do.
Wikipedia / Wikimedia (place enrichment)
- CC BY-SA requires attribution and share-alike on adapted text.
DWD ICON-EU precipitation, wind gusts and 2 m temperature (opendata.dwd.de)
- Name the DWD as the source (
X-Attributionon the tiles, attribution.iconeuin the manifest, this page). - Mark modified products: our frames are hourly differences of the published accumulations, not the raw fields.
EUMETNET OPERA weather-radar composite (via MeteoGate Open Radar Data)
- Attribution to EUMETNET OPERA, on the map and in the API (
X-Attribution). - The listing API is rate-limited at 200 requests/hour per client, and that quota was exhausted on our server on the first evening although we made ≈4 requests/hour — so the ingest discovers products by probing the S3 cache's predictable paths instead (
RAIN_OPERA_LISTING=s3) and only touches the API with an API key.
MET Norway 1 km hourly forecast (thredds.met.no, Nordic)
- Attribution is required (the forecast tiles'
X-Attributionnames MET when the overlay is on), and MET require an identifying User-Agent. - Subset, never download whole files: a forecast run is ~4 GB.
MET Norway Locationforecast (api.met.no)
- Attribution is required, and MET require an identifying User-Agent.
MET Norway radar nowcast (thredds.met.no, Nordic 1 km)
- Attribution is required (the nowcast tiles'
X-Attributionnames MET when the overlay is on), and MET require an identifying User-Agent. - Subset, never download whole files: the mosaic is ~90 MB per 5 minutes.
Nominatim (OpenStreetMap Foundation)
- The OSMF Nominatim usage policy caps automated use at 1 request/second and requires an identifying User-Agent.
OpenStreetMap
- Attribution — the credit must be shown wherever the data is.
- Share-alike — ODbL §4.4 attaches to a Derivative Database, not to a Produced Work. Which of the artefacts above is which has NOT been ruled on. That is WP-D3 in
PLANNING/TODO_data_licensing.md, it is a lawyer's call, and this page deliberately does not pre-empt it. - Overpass has a usage policy as well as a licence — see the operational notes at the foot of this page.
Trans Euro Trail®
- ⚠️ Clause 7, verbatim: "You undertake not to share this GPX on any electronic file sharing device or server."
- Clause 8 puts an obligation on the RIDER — to download the most recent GPX for their country just before they need it, and to take updates while travelling.
- Clauses 2–5 disclaim all warranty and accuracy; clause 27 asks users to follow the TET Code of Conduct; clause 16 limits any claim to the UK, Isle of Man or Channel Islands.
- Trans Euro Trail® is a registered trade mark — spell it with the ®.
- ⚠️ Whether the DERIVED renderings on this page — the network tiles and the country overviews — may be published at all is an open question, not a settled yes. See
PLANNING/tet_replacement.md.
Share-alike, and what it might attach to
Some of what we use is under a share-alike licence — ODbL for OpenStreetMap, CC BY-SA for Wikipedia. Share-alike reaches a derivative database; it does not reach a produced work such as a rendered map image. Several things we build sit between those two descriptions, and we have not ruled on which they are. That question is with a lawyer; this page exists partly to give them an accurate list to rule on, and deliberately does not pre-empt the answer.

| OpenStreetMap | ODbL 1.0 (Open Database License) | The routing graph (Valhalla tiles), the self-hosted vector basemap, the unpaved-surface classification, barrier and gate data, the TET augmented network, and POI layers including speed cameras and fuel stations. Also our own road-curvature database: three algorithms of ours score OSM geometry directly — total turning (Σ|Δbearing|), turning density per km, and mean corner radius — each into its own database, so the twistiness scores in FastGIS are computed here rather than taken from anybody. |
| Photon (Komoot) | ODbL 1.0 (via OpenStreetMap) | Place search and reverse geocoding. |
| Wikipedia motorcycle infoboxes | CC BY-SA 4.0 | Specification figures for models the manufacturers no longer publish, cited per fact. |
Sources we deliberately do not use
Recorded so the decision stays visible and nobody re-proposes them. Individual facts carry no copyright, but the EU sui generis database right protects a compilation independently, and these publishers have expressly reserved their rights.
| Source | Why not |
|---|---|
| autoevolution.com/moto | User-agent: GPTBot / PerplexityBot / Bytespider — Disallow: / |
| motoplanete.com / .es / .us | "You may not reproduce, copy, sell, resell, or exploit for any commercial purpose any part of the Service, any use of the Service, or any right to access the Service." |
| motorcycledb.com | Content-Signal: search=yes,ai-train=no,use=reference — "ANY RESTRICTIONS EXPRESSED VIA CONTENT SIGNALS ARE EXPRESS RESERVATIONS OF RIGHTS UNDER ARTICLE 4 OF THE EUROPEAN UNION DIRECTIVE 2019/790" |
Obligations that are not licences
Some sources bind us by their terms of use rather than by copyright, and those bite sooner.
The OpenStreetMap Foundation tile usage policy — We do not use tile.openstreetmap.org. We did once, as a shipped app's default basemap, and were blocked — which is precisely what the policy forbids: bulk traffic from an unidentified client. Our own basemap rendering exists partly for this reason. The absence is asserted from the outside by a live probe, so it cannot come back by accident.
Overpass API usage — Overpass is a donated public service with its own usage policy on request volume and caching, separate from the ODbL licence on the data it serves. We send an identifying User-Agent, cache every answer in Redis on a 1°×1° grid for 24 hours, cap the fan-out a single request may cause, and fall back across three mirrors rather than hammering one.
MET Norway — MET's terms require an identifying User-Agent and that responses are cached rather than re-fetched. Both are implemented — the client sends a named User-Agent, caches per ~1 km cell, and honours Expires and If-Modified-Since.
Trailguide.no — Never ingested. Trailguide's own trail content is all-rights-reserved, so only its upstream open sources — OpenStreetMap and the national DEMs — are used, and those are fetched independently from the publishers listed above. Recorded in scripts/mtb/licenses.py rather than merely omitted, so the decision stays visible; the three motorcycle-spec aggregators in the section above are the same kind of entry.
⚠️ Sources whose licence has not been read
Each of these is a short job for somebody, not an open question: the publisher is named and the terms are published. They are listed rather than guessed at, and tests/test_data_sources.py::test_the_unverified_list_does_not_grow fences the list so a new one cannot appear unnoticed.
| Source | Published by | What is known |
|---|---|---|
| Copernicus EU-DEM v1.1 25 m via OpenTopoData | Copernicus EU-DEM v1.1, reached through the public OpenTopoData service | OpenTopoData's own fair-use policy applies on top of the data licence. |
| SRTM 1 arc-second ~30 m via OpenTopoData | NASA SRTM, reached through the public OpenTopoData service | OpenTopoData's own fair-use policy applies on top of the data licence. |
| Lantmäteriet Markhöjdmodell 1 m (STAC COG, Basic auth) | Lantmäteriet (Sweden) | ⚠️ Credential-gated (LANTMATERIET_USER / LANTMATERIET_PASS), so our use of it rests on an account agreement rather than an open licence. Most likely of the fifteen to carry terms we are not currently meeting. |
| Esri World Imagery | — | Esri's terms for the World Imagery basemap have not been read and recorded. The credit below is the one the service itself publishes. |
Mapzen elevation-tiles-prod (SRTM + GMTED2010) | — | The bucket republishes NASA SRTM (public domain) and USGS GMTED2010 (public domain), but the terms of the aggregate bucket itself have not been read. The underlying sources are the permissive ones; the citation is what is missing. |
| VIIRS Night-time Lights (VNL) annual composite | — | Published by the Earth Observation Group; the VNL products are generally offered for free use with citation, but the exact terms have not been read and recorded here. |
How this page is made
app/datasources/inventory.py reads the source registries in the pipelines, the credit constants next to the API routes, and every external host named anywhere in the server, the pipelines or either app. A host nobody has characterised fails the build, so a new data source cannot be added quietly — which is what happened to the hand-written table this replaces.
